Supporting Components features a collection of objects, videos, and architectural interventions, most of which are developed by Che Yeh and Yingheng Huang during their time as artist-in-residence at University of the Arts.
Through researching furniture like ergonomic chairs, office cubicle systems, as well as livestock farming equipment, Yeh and Huang attempt to unpack the way institutional spaces and apparatus are designed to prime the behaviors of different bodies. And furthermore, they examine the way productivity, efficiency, mobility, and Western liberalism are bound up and promoted through the scoring of those behaviors. The replicas, casts, and templates shown in the exhibition conjure various body parts held and supported. They propose dialogue among objects, built environments, bodies, and selves.
Formally and materially, the works respond to components that constitute the typical corporate office, such as shiftable privacy panels, long-lasting work surfaces, modular storage units, interchangeable structural legs, and standardized connection mounts. When these seemingly rudimentary objects are slightly manipulated and placed out of their original context, their functions became obscure. What’s left are traces of the ways they adjust and delineate bodies’ movements, postures and positions.
